Description

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is a perennial evergreen shrub with large, velvety, highly fragrant leaves and spikes of purple flowers. Its name is believed to have originated from the Hindi word 'pacholi,’ which means 'to scent'. Patchouli leaves were placed between the valuable pashmina scarves the British brought back from colonial India in the nineteenth century. It is used widely as a fragrant ingredient in the formulations of perfumes, incense sticks, laundry detergents, and air fresheners.
