Description

Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), is a bushy tree with long branches and twigs, small narrow leaves, and white cotton-puff, flowers. The plant received the name "tea tree" around 1770 from the British explorer Captain James Cook and his crew. Although Cook's crew first used the leaves for tea, they later mixed them with spruce leaves as a beer.

Tea tree is a multi-purpose herb that traces its roots to the Aboriginal people of Australia. They used the leaves as an antiseptic and antifungal ointment by crushing the leaves and making a mudpack. Today tea tree oil is an active ingredient in several shampoos and skincare products.
